Editing Revit Titleblock and its Revisions: FAQs Answered
I've worked on BIM projects involving data centers, commercial buildings and even rail projects. Regardless of the type of project, they all had one thing in common - titleblocks. There are times when just the revision or description of the titleblock need to be amended and you don't really want to trouble anyone. Here is a compilation of some frequently asked questions I've gotten. It's tagged under the 'Titleblock' tag for your future reference!
Common Problems / FAQs
- How do I show revision '-' in my revision table?
- My text does not fit into the titleblock, how do I change the text size?
- For this project, the project manager prefers for the revision table's header to be at the bottom, how do I change that?
- I need a note for some sheets only, is there a faster way to do it?
- Why did my revision skip an alphabet/number?
Customize Numbering Options
How do I show revision '-' in my revision table?
In some cases such as for a preliminary submission, review or first submission, drawings need to be prepared without a revision. A simple adjustment in the 'Customize Numbering Options' window will do the trick! Â
In the 'View' tab, 'Sheet Composition' section, click 'Revisions'. Ensure your revisions have 'Alphanumeric' numbering assigned as this works only for it. Click on the 'Alphanumeric...' 'Numbering options' on the left of the window. In the 'Customize Numbering Options' window, update the 'Sequence' by typing ' - , ' before ' A '.
Tag Label Type Properties
My text does not fit into the titleblock, how do I change the text size?
With drawing numbers needing to comply with naming conventions set up by the project, it may end up being too long to fit within the titleblock. Creating a new type will help solve it for the whole project.
Click on the titleblock followed by the 'Edit Family' function. Select the tag label/text and click on 'Edit Type' in the 'Properties' palette. To create a new family type, click on 'Duplicate...' to avoid deleting existing types. Name your type followed by changing the 'Text Size' parameter to the preferred size. Once done, in the ribbon, click on 'Load into Project'/'Load into Project and Close'.
Revision Properties
For this project, the project manager prefers for the revision table's header to be at the bottom, how do I change that?
Different projects have different titleblock formats. Depending on where the revision schedule is placed, the header placement has to be adjusted. Here's the quick solution!
Click on the titleblock followed by the 'Edit Family' function. In the 'Project Browser', select the 'Revision Schedule'. In the 'Properties' palette, click on 'Edit...' for 'Appearance'. Under the 'Graphics' section, select either 'Top-down' or 'Bottom-up' build schedule. Once done, in the ribbon, click on 'Load into Project'/'Load into Project and Close'.
Visibility Parameter
I need a note for some sheets only, is there a faster way to do it?
Create a tag label/text with your preferred type settings. Click on the text. In the 'Properties' palette, for the 'Visible' parameter, click on the 'Associate Family Parameter' button. Create a new parameter with your preferred settings. Once done, in the ribbon, click on 'Load into Project'/'Load into Project and Close'.
Sheet Issues/Revisions
Why did my revision skip an alphabet/number?
This simple fix will affect all the sheets in the project. Do remember to inform or have a prior discussion with the model users before changing.
In the 'View' tab, 'Sheet Composition' section, click 'Revisions'. Under the 'Numbering' section on the right side of the window, select 'Per Sheet'.
Closing Thoughts
Compared to the very experienced BIM Modelers I have worked with, I am a very young BIM Specialist. My passion for Revit and other related software applications allows me to troubleshoot many Revit issues. However, I will never get to where I am without the know-hows and project experience from those way longer in the industry.Â
